A poem for a student.

Steve Waddell • April 7, 2015

I heard this on a segment about the Rooted School in New Orleans. And I will not claim to be a big Tu Pac fan. But this poem hit me. I think it speaks to anyone who feels the odds are against them. At the heart of it all is keeping one’s dreams – regardless what the world throws at you. It is a sentiment I hope to instill in my son, and it is, what I am sure, every educator wants to inspire in their students.

The Rose That Grew From Concrete

Did you hear about the rose
that grew from a crack in the concrete
Proving nature’s law is wrong
it learned 2 walk without having feet
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned 2 breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else even cared!
